I’m planning to buy a car. I’m a 37-year-old man and feel confused about which option would be both safe and comfortable for city driving as well as occasional highway use. I’m looking for an automatic variant, with a budget of up to ₹8-9 lakh. Please suggest suitable options.

Almost all cars today are equipped with basic safety features like ESP, along with ABS with EBD. It helps prevent an accident in the first place, and these also have 6 airbags to protect the occupants in case of a collision.

Hence, as far as safety features go, most cars have you covered. That said, if you're looking for an automatic vehicle with an excellent 5-star BNCAP crash test rating within your budget, the Maruti Dzire AMT is the one to go for.

The engine is smooth and refined, and even the AMT (automatic) is relatively smoother than many other options at this price. The cabin is spacious and comfortable, and it drives well on the highway, too.

Alternatively, you could consider the Maruti Baleno or Toyota Glanza, both of which are 4-star BNCAP-rated vehicles.

I am looking for an automatic sedan under ₹10 lakh for a newly married couple.

The Maruti Suzuki Dzire and Honda Amaze are the best automatic sedan options under Rs 10 lakh. If a smooth, automatic transmission and drive experience are priorities for you, the Honda Amaze CVT is the one you should look at. It's a great pick, especially if rear seat space isn't a deciding factor.
The Maruti Suzuki Dzire uses a less sophisticated AMT-type automatic transmission. Gearshifts aren't slick, and there is a noticeable pause in power delivery between shifts, especially under quick acceleration. In other areas, though, the Dzire does come across as the more wholesome package. It's got a more spacious interior, packs in more features, is more fuel-efficient, and also costs a whole lot less.

I have a budget of ₹11 lakh. Is the Honda Amaze VX CVT a good option in terms of ride quality and reliability?

The Honda Amaze is a strong option, thanks to its polished and premium CVT automatic, which makes it very easy and pleasant to drive. Although the Amaze is a newer model, it uses the same tried-and-tested engine and gearbox that Honda has offered for years, and this setup has proven to be dependable and reliable.
The ride quality is good as well, though this is where the Maruti Suzuki Dzire has a slight edge. The Dzire feels more pliant over bad roads, whereas sharper bumps are felt a bit more inside the Amaze’s cabin, especially by rear seat passengers. That said, it is not a deal breaker.
We would recommend taking a proper, long test drive with your family before making the final decision.

Hi, I own a 2023 Dzire VXi. I really like the new upgrades on Citroen cars. I think people are not recognising the potential Citroen has. I sometimes consider selling my Dzire and buying the Citroen C3 Aircross automatic. What would you suggest?

The Aircross is a good option to consider. It is spacious, comfortable, and with the update has a good feature list too. The 1.2-litre turbo-petrol engine is punchy, and the 6-speed automatic gearbox is smooth.
The only downside compared to your current Maruti Suzuki Dzire is that the Aircross will not be as fuel-efficient, and the Citroen service network is far from widespread. However, if you are okay with that, you can go ahead and buy it.

I drive around 1,0000-2,000 km per month in the city and take 5-6 trips a year of up to 1,500 km one way. I am an Army veteran at pay level 5 and want to purchase the best suitable car. I have shortlisted the Grand Vitara, Hyryder, and Dzire. Please suggest.

The Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota Hyryder are bigger cars and will certainly feel like a bigger step up over your outgoing vehicle, as far as ride comfort or performance goes. Both share their 1.5-litre petrol engine and 5-speed manual gearbox. This powertrain is smooth, refined and quite efficient too. Between the two, pick the one that appeals to you more in terms of design. Another deciding factor between the two is the colour of the interior - Vitara gets a brown interior, while Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder will get a black cabin.
The outgoing Maruti Suzuki Dzire, however, might not feel like a huge upgrade over the third-generation 2017 Dzire, which you currently own. What works in its favour, however, are its excellent fuel-efficiency, as well as the premium features, like sunroof, 360-degree camera and wireless charging, all of which are available in the top variants. Given that the SUV options fall within your budget, go for them instead.

I'm looking to buy a car with a budget of 10 lakh. I'm confused about the available options and would appreciate a suggestion for an automatic vehicle with good fuel efficiency. I plan to drive approximately 500 km per month.

Given your requirements, you could consider the Maruti Suzuki Fronx or Toyota Urban Cruiser Taisor. Both these share their 1.2-litre petrol engine and 5-speed automated manual transmission (AMT), which is a smooth, refined, and efficient powertrain.
If you are open to a sedan, the Maruti Suzuki Dzire 1.2-litre petrol-AMT is another excellent option, which offers excellent cabin space and even better fuel efficiency.

My budget is ₹10-11 lakh, and this will be my first car. My monthly driving will be less than 200km. Please suggest a suitable option.

Without knowing other requirements, it is hard to pinpoint the ideal car for you. However, given that you are a new driver, we will give greater weightage to ease of use and hassle-free ownership. Based on body style, here are a few suitable options to consider:

Can you suggest a second-hand diesel vehicle, preferably a Maruti or Mahindra TUV300, in the range of ₹5-5.5 lakh?

Instead of Mahindra TUV300, it would be better for you go for the Maruti Suzuki Dzire or Swift.

Mahindra has stopped the manufacturing of TUV300, which means in future the service bill can go up. Most manufacturers promise to supply the parts, but their availability goes down, and parts become expensive.

I have been driving a manual Celerio for the past 10 years. The biggest benefit has been its very low maintenance, and I have never faced any electrical or mechanical issues. I am now planning to buy a new car next year, but I am confused about the budget. Initially, I was considering up to Rs 10 lakh, but now I feel I can stretch it to Rs 12 lakh. My main requirements are good city mileage, decent performance, and very low maintenance. Around 90% of my driving will be in the city, with a daily running of 30 to 40 km, and I also plan to do mountain trips about three times a year.

With a Rs 12 lakh budget you can get multiple body styles, including hatchbacks, compact sedans, or even SUVs. Since you've had a pleasant ownership experience, you could consider sticking to the Maruti brand itself, and shortlist Maruti Brezza, Dzire and Fronx.
If you're open to the sedan body style, get the Dzire for its space, comfort, efficiency and overall premium feel. For your mountain trips, though, the Fronx turbo will feel the most effortless to drive. That said, all the listed cars will fall within your budget, are likely to be efficient and low maintenance, and will feel like a big upgrade over your Maruti Suzuki Celerio.

I am looking to buy a new 7-seater within a budget of Rs 15 to 16 lakh. My monthly driving is around 2,500km across both city and highway conditions. Which car would be the best choice for me? If a 7-seater is not possible in this budget, which 5-seater would be the best in terms of mileage, boot space, and low maintenance?

It may not be very glamorous, but one of our favourite seven-seaters is the Maruti Suzuki Ertiga, which is very practical, reliable and suits your budget. The 1.5-litre engine is not very exciting, but paired to a smooth 6-speed automatic, it is easy to drive. With all seven seats in place, there is very little boot space, but of course, with the third row tucked away, it can comfortably carry five passengers with their luggage. Being the owner of a Maruti Dzire, you will be familiar with the Maruti Suzuki service experience, which should give you added confidence.
