BYD recently launched the eMax 7 in India, replacing the e6 MPV in its line-up. The electric MPV is essentially a facelift of the outgoing model and has no direct rivals. However, the eMax 7 does serve as an EV alternative to the Toyota Innova Hycross. Here, we take a look at how the two rivals stack up in terms of size, powertrain, seating and price.

The Innova Hycross is 45mm longer, 35mm wider, 95mm taller and has a 50mm longer wheelbase than the BYD eMax 7. Do note that both the MPVs are available with three rows of seating and offer the choice between a bench-type seat and captain seats in the middle row. However, given its width and the extra centre headrest in the third row, the Innova Hycross offers 7-seat and 8-seat layouts against eMax 7’s 6- and 7-seat options.

BYD eMax 7 vs Toyota Innova Hycross: comfort, features

The BYD eMax 7 edges ahead of the Innova Hycross with its bigger, rotatable 12.8-inch touchscreen that controls a majority of the functions as against the Innova Hycross’ 10.1-inch unit. The latter gets a panoramic sunroof, while the BYD EV gets a fixed panoramic glass roof. For the front seats, the BYD eMax 7 offers ventilation and power adjustability; the Innova Hycross has powered second-row seats with extendable leg support. Additionally, the Innova Hycross also offers a dual-zone climate control function and rear window sunshades.

Powering the eMax 7 is a front-mounted single electric motor that makes 161hp in the lower variant and 201hp in the higher one. Peak torque remains the same at 310Nm. The Innova Hycross offers the choice between a 2.0-litre NA petrol engine making 174hp and 197Nm torque and a 2.0-litre strong-hybrid petrol engine producing 186hp. While it’s like comparing apples to oranges, the BYD eMax 7 has higher power and torque outputs. Given that it’s an EV, the BYD MPV should also be quicker off the line.
