Hyundai Tucson vs rivals specifications comparison

The fourth-generation Hyundai Tucson is set to launch in India on August 4, and bookings for the all-new SUV are already underway. Radically different from its predecessor, the new Tucson finds itself in the growing company of premium SUVs such as the Jeep Compass, Citroen C5 Aircross and the Volkswagen Tiguan. We compare the new Tucson against all its rivals on paper to see how it stacks up in terms of size, powertrain options and specifications.

As you can see in the table above, the new Tucson is the longest SUV in its class by quite a margin, and it also has the longest wheelbase, with only the C5 coming a close second. That’s because the new Tucson has come to India in its long-wheelbase guise, which also makes it quite roomy on the inside. Globally, there’s also a short-wheelbase version.

In terms of width and height, however, the C5 Aircross has the edge over other SUVs. Overall, the Compass is the smallest of all four. Do note that the Trailhawk variant of the Compass measures 5mm shorter and 27mm taller than the standard SUV, due to revised bumpers and increased ground clearance.

In terms of fuel tank capacity, the Compass and Tiguan have the largest, at 60 litres, followed by the Tucson and the C5 Aircross. All SUVs ride on 18-inch alloy wheels on their higher-spec trims.

The Tucson and the Compass both offer petrol and diesel engine options. The Tiguan is petrol-only, while the C5 Aircross only gets a diesel engine.

Compared to its petrol rivals, the Tucson has the largest engine, but is naturally aspirated, while the Compass and the Tiguan both feature turbo-petrol units. Thus, in terms of overall output, the Tucson has the lowest power and torque figures, and considerably less than the Tiguan, which has the highest figures here.

And while both the Compass and the Tiguan use 7-speed dual clutch gearboxes, the Tucson uses a 6-speed torque converter unit. The Compass is the only SUV here that pairs a manual gearbox with a petrol engine, while the Tiguan is only one that’s offered with an all-wheel-drive system in petrol guise.

While the diesel engines on the Tucson, Compass and C5 Aircross are all 2.0-litre, four-cylinder units, it is the Tucson that has the highest power and torque figures here. The C5 Aircross comes in second, while the Compass is the least powerful of the lot.

Here again, the Compass is the only SUV to be offered with a manual gearbox with its diesel engine. As for their automatic gearboxes, all three SUVs use torque converter units. And while the C5 Aircross is only offered in front-wheel-drive guise, the Tucson and Compass also get the option of all-wheel drive with their diesel-automatic powertrains. Interestingly, the automatic gearbox on the Compass is only available with all-wheel drive.

Hyundai Tucson vs rivals: only SUV with ADAS

All four SUVs are generously equipped with features that you’d expect from this class of SUVs – large touchscreens, digital instrument clusters, panoramic sunroofs, powered driver’s seat, dual-zone climate control, ambient lighting and six airbags. But where the Tucson stands out is ADAS features. The only one with an ADAS suite, it brings with it features such as forward collision warning, blind spot assist, lane keep assist, rear cross traffic alert, adaptive cruise control and auto emergency braking.

Hyundai Tucson vs rivals: route to India

Like its predecessor, the Tucson comes to India as a CKD (completely knocked down) kit and is assembled here. The C5 Aircross and the Tiguan too are locally assembled. The Compass is the only SUV that is completely made in India and is even exported to global markets.
