Toyota is working on a major expansion for its Land Cruiser line-up that already sees three rugged SUVs. The brand recently showed a completely different Land Cruiser EV and also teased a smaller rugged SUV during the Land Cruiser Prado’s debut event.
Toyota recently filed a trademark for the Land Cruiser FJ name in Japan and sources tell us that the “smaller rugged SUV” that is in the works will get the Land Cruiser FJ moniker.

Toyota Land Cruiser FJ will bring back the FJ moniker
The name FJ has been a legendary moniker for Toyota with most Land Cruiser generations bearing the FJ suffix, starting from the FJ20 back in 1955. The last time Toyota used the FJ name on an SUV was for the retro-styled “FJ Cruiser” that was sold from 2006 to 2022.
The Land Cruiser FJ would continue to get retro-style design cues and will most likely be a production version of the Toyota Compact Cruiser SUV concept that was revealed last year. The teaser shown matches the upright and boxy look of the Compact Cruiser concept except for the C-shaped headlamp signature.
Toyota Land Cruiser FJ platform
The platform on which this SUV would sit still remains a mystery. Toyota currently has two ladder-frame platforms that underpin its SUV line-up. The more advanced TNGA-F architecture forms the basis of the Land Cruiser 300 and Land Cruiser Prado and pickups like the new Tacoma, while the slightly older IMV architecture underpins the Hilux and the Fortuner. Toyota recently has also showcased the IMV 0 ladder-frame platform that will debut with the Hilux Champ and will have more body styles in future.
Expect more details to be revealed on the Land Cruiser FJ in the coming months.
