Tata Nexon 78 variant lineup explained

Tata Motors is going the extra mile to have a Nexon for every buyer, at every price point, which is why the brand has a massive variant line-up for its compact SUV. This level of personalisation is definitely unique and while the intention is certainly a good one, choosing the right one for you from among so many different versions can be a task.

The brand officially says that there are four personas and 10 base variants – counting in the two engine, four transmission and the sunroof options – Tata says that makes a total of 37 variants for the Nexon. However, the company's website has 78 versions and price points listed, which muddies the waters even more.

Hence, we’re going to explain the variant mix, and simplify the features list for each version of the Nexon currently on sale. Do note that we haven’t included the all-electric version here, and the compact SUV’s range is set to expand soon with the introduction of the Nexon iCNG. Including those will see the Nexon range offered at over a 100 price points.

    Tata Nexon powertrains

The Tata Nexon is offered with two engine options – a 1.2-litre three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine making 120hp and 170Nm and a 1.5-litre four-cylinder diesel engine producing 115hp and 260Nm. While the diesel has 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual and 6-speed AMT options, the petrol has 5-speed manual, 6-speed manual, 6-speed AMT and 7-speed dual-clutch auto gearbox options.

    Tata Nexon variants

To simplify the Nexon’s line-up let’s first sub-categorise the range into two – personas (as Tata calls them) and sub-variants. There are essentially four personas: Smart, Pure, Creative and Fearless, each with their respective sub-variants, which are detailed below. The sub-variants get ‘+’, ‘S’, ‘DT’ and ‘Dark’ suffixes, and add some features. Most sub-variant’s names are self-explanatory – the ‘S’ stands for sunroof, ‘DT’ means dual-tone (usually priced Rs 10,000 more), and Dark is obviously the all-black versions.

    Tata Nexon Smart

    Tata Nexon Smart

The Nexon range starts with the recently introduced Smart (O) at Rs 8 lakh, which comes with kit such as six airbags, ESP, rear parking sensors, LED lighting and DRLs, front power windows and drive modes for the engine. The Smart + (priced Rs 90,000 higher) adds a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system, four speakers, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, rear power windows and power adjust for the ORVMs. Meanwhile, those who opt for the Smart + S (priced Rs 1.4 lakh above the Smart) additionally get auto headlights and wipers and a powered sunroof.

The Smart variants are offered with both engine options, though the petrol is available with the 5-speed manual and the 6-speed AMT, while the diesel is only available in 5-speed manual form.

    Tata Nexon Pure

Next is the Pure trim, which adds features such as wheel covers, rear AC vents, follow-me-home headlamps, a 4-inch MID and voice commands for the phone and media. This trim only gets an ‘S’ sub-variant (costing Rs 50,000 more), which adds a sunroof, along with auto headlights and wipers. The Nexon Pure is on offer with both engines in 6-speed manual and 6-speed AMT guise.

    Tata Nexon Creative

The mid-spec Creative trim gets 16-inch alloys wheels, a rear camera, tyre pressure monitor, a 7-inch digital driver display, auto-dimming IRVM, automatic climate control, keyless entry and go, powered ORVMs, cooled glove box and a rear wash-wiper. The Creative DT adds dual-tone exterior colour options for Rs 10,000 more, while Creative + adds a 360-degree camera, front parking sensors, blind spot and tyre pressure monitors, a 10.25-inch touchscreen, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, cruise control, auto fold ORVMs, auto-dimming IRVM, auto headlights and wipers, and a rear wash-wiper.

As mentioned earlier, the Creative + S adds a sunroof to the package. Dark editions start with the Creative trim line and cost about Rs 35,000 more. Other than the 5-speed manual for the petrol engine, Creative trims are on offer with the other five gearbox options – 6-speed manual and AMT for both engines, and a 7-speed dual-clutch for the petrol.

    Tata Nexon Fearless

Finally, the top-spec Fearless trim, which is only available in dual-tone and Dark forms, gets front fog lamps, a 360 degree camera, blind-spot monitoring, a rear defogger, a 10.25-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.25-inch digital driver display, four speakers and tweeters, wireless charging, wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, and a 60:40 split-folding rear seat. As before, the Fearless S adds a voice activated sunroof, while the Fearless + S additionally gets ventilated front seats and Tata’s IRA connected car tech. AMT and DCT versions also get a sub-woofer. Nexon Fearless variants are available in petrol-manual, petrol-DCT auto, diesel-manual and diesel-AMT forms.

    Tata Nexon rivals

None of the Tata Nexon's rivals have nearly as many versions on offer. The Hyundai Venue has a total of 32 (including the N Line), Mahindra offers the XUV 3XO in 25, Kia’s Sonet is available in 23, while the Renault Kiger, Maruti Brezza and Nissan Magnite have a total of 21, 10 and 8, respectively.
