Most were expecting this year’s Geneva motor show to be dominated by displays of compact SUVs, a sector of the market that is doing remarkably well both in India and international markets like Europe. And while the diminutive SUVs were present, what completely stole the limelight and focus this year was the debut of an impressive collection of super-performance cars.

Other than the eagerly anticipated production version of the McLaren P1 and the LaFerrari – Ferrari’s replacement for the Enzo, the other big names at the show were the new Porsche 911 GT3, the Lamborghini Veneno and some special art editions of the Bugatti Veyron.

Then there were others like the Koenigsegg Hundra, the Spyker B6 Venator concept, the Pininfarina Sergio concept and the handsome Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible. With some super-powerful luxury cars such as the 624bhp Rolls-Royce Wraith (the coupé version of the Ghost) and the Aston Martin Rapide S, the 2013 Geneva show looked principally like a horsepower parade of epic proportions. Another impressive attention grabber was the fastest-ever Jaguar saloon, the XFR-S.

As for those compact SUVs, they did make their presence felt. The Ford Ecosport made its European debut, and other cars from the segment on display included the Peugeot 2008 and the Renault Captur. Going a step smaller still was the Adam Rocks, a toughened-up version of the Euro market Opel/Vauxhall Adam hatchback.

Also definitely worth a mention is the exquisite Volkswagen XL1 super-economy car, shown in production form for the first time and cleared for manufacture in two batches, but still without a price.

So this year’s Geneva motor show was swept by the bevy of supercars and most of the clamour was to catch a glimpse of these exciting new machines. And with worthies like the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Lamborghini Veneno, among several other thrillers, one can surely relate.
