While considering the naturally aspirated Seltos IVT, I came across feedback suggesting that its mid-range performance may feel weak even for city driving. So my confusion is between the Seltos and the new Duster, as well as between turbo and naturally aspirated engine options. Given my usage—mostly city driving with an occasional 250 km highway trip once every six months—which car and configuration would you recommend?

For your usage, which is 90% city driving, the Kia Seltos IVT automatic is still the more sensible and easier-to-live-with choice. The IVT gearbox is smooth, creep-friendly and very well suited to stop-and-go traffic, making daily driving stress-free.Your concern about the naturally aspirated engine’s mid-range is valid, but in city conditions, it is not a major issue. You are rarely operating in that 40-80 km/h band where the lack of punch is most noticeable, and for regular driving, the engine feels smooth and predictable. For the occasional highway trip, it will cruise comfortably, though you will need to plan overtakes a bit more.The Renault Duster turbo, on the other hand, will definitely feel stronger in terms of performance and mid-range, and it will be the more engaging car to drive. It will also likely offer a more comfortable ride over bad roads. However, for predominantly city usage, it may not feel as effortless or smooth as the Seltos IVT.So the choice comes down to priorities. If you want a smooth, easy and low-stress daily driver, the Seltos IVT is the better fit. If you value stronger performance and a more engaging drive, and are willing to compromise slightly on ease of use in traffic, the Duster turbo is worth considering.

Without knowing any further requirements, or your budget, it's hard to make a definitive recommendation. However, all things considered, the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol MT is the better overall package than the Skoda Kushaq 1.0 TSI MT. For one, just the power alone is considerably higher in the Duster 1.3, and in fact, it's more than even the Kushaq's larger 1.5 TSI has on offer. Thereafter, the two SUVs are closely matched - both have excellent handling, both offer good space and comfort in the front seat, though it's only average in the rear seat, and both are now well equipped. However, the Duster edges ahead in two areas - the first being boot space, which is a massive 518 litres, compared to about 385 in the Skoda. And the other is ride comfort - while the Kushaq is good, the Duster is even better, delivering a ride that is comfortable, stable and solid feeling, all at once. Thus, overall, the Duster 1.3 Turbo is the better choice.

Choose the Renault Duster 1.3 Techno MT if you specifically want a tough, manual SUV and like driving.The new Duster’s suspension is one of its big strengths: it rides beautifully over broken roads, has 212 mm of ground clearance, and feels robust, which really suits Indian conditions and frequent highway use. It has a very large boot and is well-equipped for the price, making it a solid family and touring car.The 1.3 turbo-petrol is among the most powerful engines in the segment, so performance is strong once the turbo is on boost. However, in the manual, you will feel some turbo lag at low revs, and you do need to downshift to keep it in the meat of the powerband, especially in slow city traffic or on inclines. The gearbox itself is light, with positive shifts, and the clutch effort is friendly enough for daily use.

The new Duster's 1.3-litre, four-cylinder engine puts out a punchy 160hp/280Nm, and it can be had with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. Renault claims a mileage of 17.75kpl for the manual and 18.45kpl for the DCT auto, but expect real-world figures to be around 8-14kpl for both versions, depending on the traffic and your driving style. The India-spec Duster is 50mm taller than the overseas one to account for the panoramic sunroof, and as such, you shouldn't have any problem with your 6ft 2inch frame. The Duster also gets a segment-best 518 litre boot, and that, coupled with its composed ride quality make it a great road trip companion.

For your requirement, the 1.0-litre turbo petrol Renault Duster should be adequate for your usage, but there are a few things to keep in mind. Although we haven’t driven this engine in the Duster yet, we have experienced it in cars like the Renault Kiger and Nissan Magnite. In those cars, the engine feels peppy and responsive, especially in city conditions.Now, the Duster is a larger and heavier car, so performance will take a slight hit compared to those smaller SUVs. However, for city driving, it should feel more than sufficient, and thanks to the turbo, it will still offer good low-end torque, making it easy to drive in traffic. On the highway, it should be able to keep up with fast-moving traffic comfortably, and overtaking should not feel stressful.That said, we strongly recommend that you test drive the 1.0-litre version before deciding. Since it is a 3-cylinder engine, you may notice some vibration at idle and hard acceleration, something we have experienced in the Kiger and Magnite.If your priority is smoothness and refinement, you can also consider options like the Tata Sierra, Hyundai Creta or Kia Seltos, which offer more refined petrol engines. However, in terms of outright punch and torque feel, the turbo Duster will still feel stronger.

Checking out your options is always wise, especially when the purchase is of high value.If interior space and features are a key criterion, then the Duster and Kushaq aren't really better off than the Seltos. However, where the Duster and the Kushaq are really good is if you enjoy driving, as both SUVs have responsive engines and provide an entertaining handling feel with good road grip and body control around corners.

•1wHey Autocar team, I probably posted this question before, but could not find it, so I am asking again. I am a 26-year-old, 5'8" guy with a budget between ₹13-16 lakh looking for a new car. I have been driving for the last 8 years, multiple cars, including the Tata Vista 1.2L diesel, the i10 Nios 4-cylinder petrol AMT, and the Syros (recently) in the family, and I am now looking for my first car to own. I am inclined towards cars with good handling, a peppy engine, predictable steering, supportive seats, decent fuel efficiency, and a strong AC. Fancy features like a sunroof, cooled storage, and a 360-degree camera are not my requirements. I had shortlisted the Kylaq Signature manual and the XUV 3XO GDI MT, but with the new Duster and the updated Kushaq in the mix, I am confused again. I haven’t tested these new cars yet, but I wanted to know if the Duster is as good in handling and dynamics as the Kylaq and 3XO, and whether the Kushaq’s issues with the back seat and AC have been resolved, along with the new 8-speed Aisin AT. My monthly running is around 1,000 km, with 60% in the city. Any other suggestions are also appreciated. Could you please help?

We'd trim the shortlist to the Skoda Kushaq and Renault Duster. The Skoda Kushaq remains fun to drive as before, but 2026's updates have enhanced the package. The 8-speed Aisin automatic transmission delivers power in a smoother manner without losing the sporty nature of the old 6-speed unit. Skoda has also upgraded the AC, and the cooling performance is significantly better than before. It's no longer a deal breaker. A rear seat massage function has been introduced on higher-spec versions, but aside from this, there haven't been any changes to seating at the back. Legroom and headroom are decent, but the cabin isn't the widest, so the rear seat continues to be best for two passengers. The new Renault Duster drives fantastically. Handling is neat, there's a great feel at the steering and body control is really good. We have yet to experience the 1.0-litre engine, but the 160hp, 1.3-litre unit is very enjoyable. It's punchy and great fun when paired with the manual gearbox. On our first drive experience, we were satisfied with the cooling performance, too. Rear seat comfort is decent but not class best.

I have shortlisted the Mahindra XUV700 AX7 diesel manual and the Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol manual. I recently test-drove the XUV700 diesel automatic and was impressed with its cabin space and ride quality. I intend to keep the new car for around 15 years and am specifically looking for a driver-focused car as an upgrade from my Verna. Could you please suggest which of these would be the better choice for my needs?

We would suggest going for the Mahindra XUV 7XO diesel manual. The biggest reason is that it feels like a proper upgrade in every sense. It is a larger, more spacious car, with a more premium cabin and a very comfortable ride, which you have already experienced in your test drive.More importantly, the diesel engine suits what you are used to with your Verna. It offers strong low-end torque and relaxed cruising, which makes it feel effortless on highways and more satisfying to drive over long distances. Over a long ownership period, diesel also tends to be more efficient for regular highway use.The Renault Duster 1.3 turbo petrol, on the other hand, is a good driver’s car. It will feel lighter and easier to drive, especially in tighter city conditions. However, while the turbo petrol is enjoyable, it won’t give you the same sense of punch as the Mahindra larger 2 litre diesel, or the same space and long-distance comfort as the XUV 7XO.We would still urge you to test drive the new Duster before taking a final call, but as an overall upgrade, the XUV 7XO is the stronger choice.

•1wI am a 26-year-old engineer, thinking of buying my first car. My monthly salary is around ₹90k-1 lakh. My budget is around ₹16-17 lakh max. My travel will be 30+ km daily, and on weekends I will be travelling up to 500 km on average. I am looking for an automatic car with a good safety rating and low maintenance. I was thinking of the Tata Curvv Creative Plus S model, which has a 360-degree camera as well as a sunroof, along with good safety, and I like the coupe design especially. But do let me know if the Tata Curvv is the perfect choice for me, or if I should consider another car as well. Also, I am confused about whether to opt for a petrol automatic or a diesel. If I opt for diesel, I will have to pay more but will get better mileage, so do let me know your thoughts as well.

If you like the Tata Curvv and its design, you should opt for it. It has secured a 5-star crash test rating from Bharat NCAP and is equipped with all the necessary safety kit. Given your usage, the extra outlay for the diesel automatic does not seem worth it, and the turbo petrol engine should feel like a good mix of performance and fuel economy for you.Downsides of the Curvv, however, are a DCT gearbox that can be jerky at low speeds, limited rear-seat space and poor cabin ergonomics. Plus, it has been known to suffer software glitches, and Tata's service quality is reportedly not as good as some other brands.Another option you could consider is the new Renault Duster. Its boxy shape may not be anything like the low-slung Curvv's, but it is quite appealing in its own right, and its 1.3 turbo petrol engine and DCT combination is a good mix of smoothness and performance.
